Exhibition: Rita Dee – At the Edge of the Sea – Ruskin Mill College

Tuesday 12 March – Monday 22 April

Rita Dee

At the Edge of the Sea

Inspiration for this exhibition of watercolour and mixed media paintings comes from the natural world; in particular the seashore. Time spent meandering along a beach and gazing into rock pools is always fascinating whatever the season, with ever-changing colours and textures; also for providing natural materials which might find their way into a composition.
The resulting artwork may be quite representational, such as a close-up of a holdfast washed up on the beach, or often more imaginary, combining elements such as shells, pebbles, lichens, seaweeds and rocks.
The mixed media paintings are generally worked on a surface of crumpled tissue paper or texture paste, sometimes beginning with a random background colour in acrylic inks. The piece is then developed adding many glazing layers and finer detail, the composition often taking on a life of its own during the process.
